Ninety miles outside Chicago
Can’t stop driving I don’t know why
So many questions I need an answer
Two years later you’re still on my mind

Hermione swerved the car slightly to the right perfectly changing lanes. Driving on the wrong side of the road was really hard. But she was perfect at it – like everything else. Her driving instructor had been a bit mad, but which American was not? She sighed. America. A strange place. She wasn’t home that was for, sure but this had been her choice. She had left home 2 years ago. Britain, Hogwarts and her two best friends in the whole world... Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley. The trio had been heroes after the Dark Wars, and now those two were Aurors with the Ministry Of Magic. Ron. She sighed. That was one aspect of life she never had been and never will be perfect in. And ironically it was the aspect that mattered the most.

Whatever happened to Amelia Earhart,
Who holds the stars up in the sky ?
Is true love just once in a lifetime?
Did the captain of the Titanic cry

Britain. Ronald Weasley opened the door of his sleek Japanese car, and placed the key into the ignition. Smart muggles. Beautiful things, cars. Ron slid in and shut the door.
It was 3 years since they had all left Hogwarts. Dear, old Hogwarts. So much had happened since then. Harry and Ron had gone of and were now the Amazing Aurors.
They had even joined the ranks of the late Mad- Eye Moody. Ron sobered up. He’d died in the war. Tortured by Death Eaters. But it was all over now. Ron was now finally better than his brothers at something. Years of chess had paid of – he was the master of strategy. But his happiness was not complete, and by the looks of it , never would be.
Not without his best friend and first true love. And he did not mean Harry Potter.
Anyway Harry was happy now, he had Ginny. Ron grimaced. Even after one whole year he couldn’t stomach the thought of his best mate kissing his kid sister. Eurgh. Awful. And if that was not enough seeing them together just managed to rub salt into his wounds for now Hermione was in America. And even after a whole slew of girlfriends Ron had not been able to forget her. He coud not understand why she had left. She had been crying ever so hard but she had said she “had to”. Ron did not understand.
“ if you are so sad, then don’t go”. He’d replied and Harry had violently agreed.
“But it was not that simple” she said. Fine. Go. Why did he care? Be miserable.
And make me miserable as well. He’d whispered softly in his head.

someday we'll know
if love can move a mountain
someday we'll know
why the sky is blue
someday we'll know
why I wasn't meant for you

Hermione sighed softly. She missed Britain so much. Her friends, the food, English being spoken the way it should and for some reason she missed chocolate frogs. The people at the Salem Institute For High Sorceresses were so smart and so sweet that she even felt a little bad for not liking them so much. But she wanted home.
“if you are so sad, then don’t go”.
She heard Ron’s voice echo in her head. And her stupid, stupid answer. “Its not that simple” but it was. She grinned wryly. Ron would never realise would he? She had left because of him. Seeing him date so many other girls, watching him in their arms, imagining day and night what it would be like to be them, it had almost driven her insane. Of course she had to leave. Then the acceptance letter had arrived from America and she decided to pack up and leave… and now here she was.
She shook her head, her eyes never leaving the road. But her leaving had not changed anything. She still spent many nights thinking of what might be. Running away really did not solve anything. She should have known that by now. It had gotten Cornelius Fudge killed, Peter Pettigrew had been strung from a tree to his death- because they had both had tried to run away, had been in denial. Life sucked. Hermione giggled in spite of herself. That was an Americanism she liked. Life did suck. Especially her life, without a special red headed fool.

Does anybody know the way to Atlantis?
What the wind says when she cries
I’m speeding by the place that I met you,
For the ninety-seventh time, tonight

Ron drove straight on, up, down, turn right , turn left, up the muggle highways and down again, round, turn. Drive fast, let it all out. It wasn’t for some time until he finally realised where he was. He had been going round and round and driving past King’s Cross station.
He grinned in spite of himself, it had all begun here and here it had all ended. The final showdown between Harry and Voldemort. The grin disappeared, he drove into the parking lot and hopped out of the car. 1st pillar, 2nd pillar, 3rd pillar, 4th pillar. He walked through it onto an empty Platform 9 ¾’s. It was so strange to see it deserted. So empty and so... quiet.
A new façade stood in place of the old one, a victim of the Dark War. He turned and saw the beaten old red train with one compartment completely blown out, sitting peacefully on the tracks. He went towards it. “Alohomora!” .and the door slid open. He stepped in, it had been the compartment near the end, where he’d first met her. Hadn’t it? He walked into the compartment and sat down, stroking the soft red material, worn by generations of happy, laughing students. He ran his hand over the leather and closed his eyes. This was all he had now – memories of a life long gone. A tear slid down a freckled cheek and plinked on the floor from behind closed lids. Memories. Nothing more.

Someday we’ll know why Sampson loved Delilah,
One day I’ll go dancing on the moon
Someday you’ll know that I was the one for you
